Honduras
On behalf of the President and Board of Directors of Honduras’ largest private bank, BDLS assessed corporate capabilities, systems, structure, interim management, economic viability and operations of a foreclosed mining company. Interviewed executive and senior management, technical staff and consultants and (with a sub-contracted technical expert) evaluated mining operations. Bank retained and operated mine to profitability. BDLS was retained to prepare bank strategy for the sale and purchase by a major Canadian Mining Company
Provided international search and contract services on behalf of the President and Board of Directors of Honduras’ largest private bank to assist with the re-development of a major full service hospital in Tegucigalpa. Identified and qualified international health management firms from Canada, France, U.S. and Mexico with respect to a long-term, equity participation re-development and management contract of this state-of-the-art private hospital. Set the terms of an RFP in consultation with the Board of Directors, assisted bidders and evaluated proposals. Recommended the (ultimately) successful bidder.
Provided executive coaching, business management and strategic re-alignment expertise to the President & C.E.O. and management team of a large (9,500 employees) apparel-manufacturing firm. Played a major role in business plan development, strategic partner identification and acquisition, bank presentations (national and international) and organizational re-structuring, including assessment and recommendation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
On behalf of the largest steel fabrication company in Honduras, contributed international business development expertise in the identification, qualification, selection and signature of an international joint venture partner. Activities included executive consultation, needs analysis, business plan development as well as contact and selection of the successful joint venture partner.
On contract to the Canadian Government, BDLS planned, coordinated and lead a post-Hurricane Mitch Business Partnering Mission to Honduras and Nicaragua. This mission included 55 Canadian businesses and representatives from federal and provincial government agencies. Over 1,000 business partnering meetings were coordinated in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and Managua, Nicaragua over a one week period.
Donated time and expertise to the City of San Pedro Sula in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Mitch to establish an Office for International Aid Coordination and Reconstruction. Provided international liaison via two websites, telephone, fax and on-site meetings to coordinate international aid offers with local recipient organizations, agencies and departments. Provided status update briefings to Canadian government agencies and departments to help target Canadian emergency aid to the San Pedro Sula region.
Assisted a Canadian apparel manufacturer to design and implement a Hurricane Mitch Housing Reconstruction Project for 59 employees who lost their homes during Hurricane Mitch. BDLS accessed emergency aid funding from CIDA and functioned as Project Coordinator between the employer, a Canadian builder, the Government of Honduras and the City of San Pedro Sula, local engineers and contractors, the Canadian Embassy in Costa Rica and Canadian Consulate in Tegucigalpa.
Contracted by a major Canadian manufacturer of pre-fabricated structures to design and implement a long-term strategic initiative for Central America and the Caribbean. Identified and qualified a local partner, facilitated the development of a potential long-term business relationship and assisted with market evaluation activities throughout the region.
A Canadian developer was assisted by BDLS in identifying an emerging market in Honduras. Development of a destination village is presently in the construction stage. BDLS is assisting with financing, investment, and training, Canadian and Honduran government relations, and project planning activities. Total project value is estimated to be $US 26 Million.
Guatemala
Provided funding coordination and proposal development expertise to a group of 150 Guatemalan medical doctors to help establish an 80-bed active-treatment hospital in Guatemala City. Contributed strategic planning and project coordination services; developed funding assistance, introduced international private sector goods and services providers, directed project social and economic studies, and prepared a (successfully reviewed) technical project proposal to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Washington D.C.
Contracted by CIDA INC to introduce Canadian private sector firms to Guatemala, and contributed business consultation and international project development expertise to these companies. Coordinated meetings with senior Guatemalan businessmen, industrialists, and senior government officials and supplied strategic project identification and development assistance including joint venture structure, management and operational advice.
Assisted a major Canadian producer of boxed beef and other meat products to reposition the company as an integrated supplier of food products by identifying a business opportunity in the gourmet coffee business. Contributed expertise to facilitate the formation of a joint venture to introduce Guatemalan coffees to the Canadian market.
Contracted by a Quebec-based corporation specializing in the production and marketing of balloons and other party products, Disney, MacDonald & Pizza Hut, and a newly formed Guatemalan organization representing rubber growers, to explore the feasibility of a long term international partnership. Project activities focused on establishing a centrifuge facility as well as a manufacturing plant. Risk sharing assistance was accessed from CIDA to assist with project viability assessment.
Retained by the Guatemalan Coffee Grower’s Association (ANACAFE) to help identify international suppliers for mini-hydro initiatives. Coordinated proposals, meetings and assisted ANACAFE to evaluate bids. Provided funding coordination assistance to the ANACAFE Rural Development Foundation (FUNRURAL) to help establish a process and program to generate funds for social investment purposes.
Coordinated a Bridge Technology Strategic project started approximately six months after Hurricane Stan devastated Guatemala, Nicaragua and other countries in the region. Key sectors of the economy had been affected, including the coffee growing areas where large numbers of smaller bridges had been destroyed, creating enormous concern that coffee producers would not be able to get their crops to market. Rapid Span, a Canadian Bridge Technology company and Precon, a major concrete and construction company worked with the Coffee Growers Association and with the Guatemalan Ministry responsible for bridges (SOPTRAVI) to prepare, design and build the San Lucas Tolima Bridge connecting two major arties in rural Guatemala.
El Salvador
Assisted a major Canadian footwear manufacturer to develop a working relationship with the export division of ADOC, El Salvador’s largest shoe manufacturing enterprise. The basis of this new venture was the combination of Canadian technology and expertise with the ADOC division’s proven craftsmanship.
Nicaragua
BDLS provided key project planning expertise and consultation within a multi-disciplinary team environment to fund the establishment of a First Nations joint venture in the forestry sector. Project strategy and coaching was also provided to assist with emerging issues.
Costa Rica
Contracted by a Canadian satellite wireless/communications company to establish a joint venture with a consortium of companies in Costa Rica. This group consists of survey, engineering and construction companies with the objective of using Canadian GPS equipment and technology throughout Central America.
Retained by a major Canadian footwear manufacturer to help establish a joint venture with a Costa Rican partner. This initiative included technology transfer, training, new product design and development, as well as co-manufacturing initiatives.
